Overbed Tables Purpose-Built for Healthcare

You may have an overbed table, but do you have The Overbed Table? We used our classic engineering standards to create a design using acrylic solid surface that holds up to anything a hospital setting will throw its way.

No need to worry about wear and tear ruining your bedside furniture, with Shield you can know that durability is key and replacements are rare.

What is the Point of an Overbed Table?

While an overbed table may seem like a mindless part of a hospital room, it serves an important role in helping patients feel as though they have some level of independence.

As reported by PubMed, "There is overwhelming agreement that patients use overbed tables during meal time, while grooming, while maintaining oral and facial hygiene, while applying makeup and as a place to set out and store personal artifacts. Fulfilling these roles is critical to the quality of the patients daily life and in re-establishing functional independence."

Why pick The Overbed Table?

Shield’s The Overbed Table is a minimalistic design that takes all the worries out of cleaning and functionality. The model can be adjusted from 30” - 46” and is compatible with most patient room beds so you won’t have to sacrifice comfort or aesthetics with this all in one piece.

Being a table that is constantly touched by anyone who enters a patient room, it is incredibly important to have features such as an internal drip edge to keep water out of the design and an inverted column to minimize the spread of disease.

“Overbed tables create a ‘perfect storm’ for bacteria transmission,” as reported by EOSCU, “First, organic materials such as food crumbs and spilled drinks often sit on the surface for hours at a time. Second, everyone from the patient to healthcare workers to visitors handle the table surface… Finally, overbed tables are often not cleaned enough… The result is a highly contaminated surface that everyone touches and no one cleans.”

Created with acrylic solid surface, The Overbed Table becomes a much safer surface for patients, workers and visitors alike. Being non-porous and microbial resistant, you don’t have to worry about any bacteria lingering with the knowledge that the cleanability is easy with any disinfectant.

SIGNATURE STYLE

  • Microbial resistant - Nonporous, acrylic solid surface construction without substrates
  • Durable - Impact and scratch-resistant
  • Cleanable - Tests to no effect against common hospital cleaners and disinfectants
  • Usable - Low maintenance and repairable
  • Reliable - Guaranteed for life against manufacturer defects*

Within our designs we like to make sure that we are meshing aesthetics with functionality and The Overbed Table is the perfect combination of looks with user ease. Using a powder-coated steel pneumatic lift to help adjust the table as well as offering non-marring casters and having an <3” ground clearance to fit under most any hospital bed, this piece offers an experience that will never have you worrying about its performance.

Combined with the standards of acrylic solid surface, The Overbed Table stands by the five recommendations for healthcare furniture created by the American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE).

As told in our article surrounding the inability to support microbial growth, “With so many people moving through a space, the risk of a virus living on a surface increases tenfold as does the importance of having furniture that will keep bacteria growth to an absolute minimum.”
