SHIELD x Children's National Hospital
In 2021, Children’s National Hospital was looking to build two custom headwalls as well as a locker system for two upcoming rooms they would be renovating, the Chapel Room and the Garden Room. Both of these rooms were created to offer patients and families areas for calm and rest periods in between all of the hectic hospital activities. Within this goal was the hope that the rooms could be designed in a way that would facilitate healing and comfort for any patient.
In a collaborative effort with CannonDesign & James G. Davis Construction, Shield came up with two designs for headwalls as well as a custom locker storage system for the chapel room that would bring convenience to storing personal belongings. Creating a fully custom design meant that CNH would have headwalls created with their needs alone and would be fully functional for their space.
Garden Room & Chapel Room
Within hospitals, patients are constantly being moved around and are often in standard patient rooms. Though these rooms can be designed with patients in mind, they also have to hold all of the medical equipment, technology and staff that are needed to care for the patients in full. As an alternative, the Garden Room was created to offer respite to patients, families and friends while they are dealing with the constant change of hospital life.
With this in mind, CNH wanted the room and its furniture to be designed with ideas of tranquility and peace at the forefront. The finalized design included a floral abstract design on the front of the headwall along with sliding doors and drawers on the bottom. With the finished product, all of the med gas connections were easily hidden while also allowing for full usage by staff.
